I don’t make any secret of the fact that I use affiliate links on this blog. 9 times out of 10, when you see a link to a novel title, it’s going to one of the Amazon sites, or IndieBound. I don’t try to shove these links down anyone’s throat; they’re there if you want to have quick and easy access to buy one of the books I’ve talked about, or just to check out other reviews. Yes, though, I do get a little bit of a kickback when somebody buys something through one of those links.
Usually it’s pretty rare when this happens. I don’t mind that. If you do, you do, and if you don’t, you don’t. I don’t figure that anyone’s obligated to do so. But when it happens that somebody does use one of my affiliate links to purchase something, I want to say that I’m incredibly appreciative.
This past month marks the second time since starting this bookblog that somebody purchased something from me through Amazon.com. It may not sound like much, but thanks to them, $0.28has been added to my little virtual Amazon pile, which is set to gradually accumulate until it hits $10, then turn into a handy little gift certificate for me to use on the site. Anything purchased through this blog goes right back into it, since I’ll be using the affiliate money to purchase more books for review.
So, whoever bought the books on dog-training through me, thank you! (Not sure how you managed to do so, since I’ve never talked about dogs here before, but hey, I won’t look a gift puppy in the mouth!)
But that’s not all. Thanks to… somebody, or a host of somebodies, I’ll be getting another little kickback from this blog in a month or so. I do have a little section here for relatively small and hopefully non-annoying AdSense ads. Again, 9 times out of 10, I don’t think anybody notices or cares, and that’s fine by me. The purpose of this blog isn’t to make money, after all. But one day last week, it looks like people did a bit of clicking around and earned me a shade over $6 from AdSense, which pushed me over the top and ensured that in about a month and a half, I’ll be getting a $100 cheque from Google!
Much like the Amazon money, I want to put what this blog earns back into it, to make it better and give it the improvements it needs to become great. And while this blog only made $10.77 of that $100 (the rest came from freelance articles that I’ve done in the past), I still want to use the money responsibly. So I plan, when that cheque clears my bank account, to use a portion of it to get my own domain name for this blog!
Probably more exciting for me than for you, but I want to be above-board with whatever I earn here. It’s only thanks to my readers that I stand the chance of earning anything, whether it’s a few pennies into my AdSense account or a purchase of something through IndieBound or Amazon. Since anything I get comes from you, I feel that you all have the right to know. That’s why I’m making this post. I want anyone who reads this to know that they’re the ones ultimately responsible for this blog getting its own domain, or for allowing me to purchase a certain book I’ve been waiting for.
Thanks to all who’s helped, and who may help in the future. I love you all!
