It has a release date!

Granted, that release date is July of 2012, but that’s beside the point! I’m really excited for this one to come out!

Why? Because I’ve now been waiting for it for over a decade. I first read the Night World series when I was in high school, and part of the fun of it, aside from the lethora of vampires and shapeshifters and witches, was that the whole thing was leading up to the millenium. Y2K was on everybody’s minds, people were quoting “Nostradamus” prophecies about the end of the world in their email, and here was this series, having fun with it by introducing another series of prophecies about a secret society that existed side-by-side with the regular world. It was fun, it had its reflections in the real world, and I enjoyed following the build-up, waiting to see what was going to happen at the very end.

Then… nothing did.

There were rumours. Somebody knew somebody who’s heard online that they’d managed to get a coy of the final book. Somebody had seen it for a brief moment on Amazon before they’d taken it down. The final book was so rare that only a few people had it.

But ultimately, there was no book. Fans had the title of the book, but no actual book.

The millenium came and went. I gave up even hoping that the series would be finished, figuring the author couldn’t finish the book before the timeline, and after it had passed, had given it up as a lost cause.

Years passed. I found out that the series had been rereleased. I felt that vague hope spring up inside me, the one that said, “Hey, maybe this means the last book’s going to be written soon!”

And it was going to be written. But I’m a bit hesitant to give myself completely over to excitement just yet. It’ll be released 12 years after all the big stuff was going to go down. The rereleased books don’t make any changes to the dates involved, so I want to know how the author’s going to pull this one off. I’m excited to finally get the chance to read it, but unless the author does something spectacular to explain the 12-year timeline gap…

I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.

  1. I know exactly how you feel. I haven't read the Nightworld series but I've been waiting about the same length of time for Isobelle Carmody's Obernewtyn series to be finished. There's a new book every 4-5 years but the story is still not finished…there's only one more book to come out but the release date keeps being pushed back! I just hope the years wait is worth it for both of us! :)
