He won on the third ballot, receiving 68.6 percent of the vote and easily eclipsing the 50 percent threshold.
Cordeiro, who first joined the U.S. Soccer Federation in 2007 as its independent director, replaces Sunil Gulati. Other candidates included former U.S. internationals Paul Caligiuri, Kyle Martino and Eric Wynalda, as well as women's global goalkeeper Hope Solo.
The election took place during the federation's national council meeting, which capped the three-day annual general meeting at the Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld. But particularly among the six "outsiders", while I agreed with some candidates more than others, they all brought their heart and soul under unlikely circumstances into trying to be president.
And while since then he has been heavily involved in the sport with U.S. Soccer, that amount of time for somebody who is 61 may be viewed by many as a lack of experience within the sport, potentially impacting his understanding of what true, vital changes may be needed.
US Soccer picks new president, frustrating those seeking big changes
Cordeiro, the US Soccer vice-president, received 36.3 per cent in the first round to head the field, with Carter a close second on 34.6.
Caligiuri withdrew after receiving less than 1 percent on the first ballot.
In round 2, Cordeiro's lead grew to 41.8 percent.
Had the team gotten a draw at Trinidad and Tobago, had Panama not gotten its late goal against Costa Rica, and had the USA qualified, this election, if Gulati still chose to leave, would have been a much quieter one.
His ultimate goal is to help soccer realize its vast potential in the United States he said. We knew they were going to be the top two candidates. As much as Cordeiro tried (and succeeded) in convincing voters he wasn't an establishment candidate, is an establishment candidate.
BoE hints at 'earlier' rate hikes as MPC adopts more hawkish stance
Policymakers continue to expect strong economic growth, with GDP forecasts for 2018 and 2019 clocking in at around 3.25% annually. There is now apparently a 75% chance of hike in interest rates in May and a raise in rate by August has already been factored in.
Carter also was considered an establishment candidate due to her ties to SUM and MLS. He won the first contested U.S. Soccer presidential election since 1998, emerging victorious from an eight-candidate field that also featured Paul Caligiuri, Kathy Carter, Steve Gans, Kyle Martino, Hope Solo, Michael Winograd and Eric Wynalda.
"That's one thing I'm incredibly proud of", he added, "the way and the process that we have gone about this from conference calls". Wynalda, who has financial backing from leaders of the former second-division North American Soccer League, is running on a platform of more extreme changes to the current structure, while Martino seems more measured in his approach and wanting to build things stronger from the ground up.
"Carlos Cordeiro is not Sunil Gulati", Holden said on Saturday.
"That was perhaps to my advantage, but I tried to focus on the issues, and the issues that I thought we're important to [voters]", he said.
He's a Miami High graduate who immigrated from India with his Colombian and Portuguese parents. Gulati, the outgoing president, faces a lawsuit, as do Garber and 13 board members. They clamored for it over four tumultuous, unprecedented months.
RIP: XIV. Credit Suisse declares 'acceleration event'. Will close ETN
The forced selling that results from position covering could drag USA equity markets lower for a third straight day on Tuesday. On the social media forum Reddit, trading the XIV had proved so popular that it had earned its own forum called "tradeXIV".
"This has been a very informative campaign", Cordeiro told Pro Soccer USA. "Carlos Cordeiro wants to lead with governance, he wants to lead by building a consensus and I think he wants to empower soccer people". "And I think the membership has been engaged ... and I believe they'll make the right decision on Saturday with full knowledge of what the facts are".
Cordeiro got in the way though, lobbying numerous same constituents Gulati probably thought he would be able to count on, cutting into Carter's base and setting himself up for a victory.
"Today the status quo is unacceptable", Cordeiro said.

Sticking points could include concerns over possible prosecution for corruption allegations that remain against Zuma. If the committee agrees to recall Mr Zuma, the BBC's Andrew Harding says, it would be very hard for him to resist.
